Drug Uses
Famvir is an oral antiviral prescription medication that is used to treat recurrent genital herpes, suppression of recurrent genital herpes, treatment of recurrent herpes simplex virus infections (genital herpes and cold sores) in HIV infected patients.

How Taken
Famvir dosage depends on the treatment type. If it is episodic treatment– treatment of an outbreak of genital herpes as it occurs. The general dose of Famvir in this case is one 125mg pill, two times a day, for 5 days. In case of suppressive treatment (if you have frequent or severe outbreaks) you take one 250mg pill, two times a day, for up to 1 year to restrain the genital herpes virus and help to avoid outbreaks. In patients with herpes simplex and HIV, the dose of Famvir is 500 mg, two times a day, for 7 days. Famvir can be taken with or without a meal.

Warnings/Precautions
You may require dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have a kidney disease. Do take Famvir if you are allergic to penciclovir (Denavir). Famvir is in the FDA pregnancy category B. Which means that animal–reproduction studies have not demonstrated a fatal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women, or animal–reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the first trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters). Therefore, do not take Famvir without your doctor`s approval if you are pregnant, or likely to become pregnant.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Possible Side Effects
Stop using Famvir and seek medical attention immediately if an allergic reaction occurs (shortness of breath, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips/ face/ tongue, or hives). Some other less serious side effects are– nausea or vomiting, a headache, diarrhea, dizziness, tingling in your hands or feet, or itching. Contact your doctor if any of these or any other side effects occur.

Storage
Store this medication at room temperature 15–30°C (59–86°F). Keep away from children and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).

Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of Famvir overdosage are not very well known. However, overdosage symptoms of a similar medication Zovirax (acyclovir) include– seizures, hallucinations, and kidney damage (decreased urine production).

More Information
Start the treatment as soon as you notice the first signs (e.g. tingling, burning, and blisters). Take Famvir exactly as prescribed by your doctor, do not stop using this medication without your doctor`s approval even if you feel better. Your symptoms may start to go away, even though the infection is not completely treated. Lesions caused by herpes viruses should be kept clean and dry.
